using rit dyes: depending on the fabric construction you will get different colors from the different amounts of nylon or cotton, higher cotton means much more saturated vibrant colors, more nylon means more toned down and may need more dye to get it the color you want.
also the standard rit dye will work fine with the nylon / cotton blend, the rit dye made for polyesters seems to just make the dark colors darker and slightly change the shade of light colors, great for the plastic buckles though!
